In the first half of this year, the number of accounts in the nominee holding system of the Central Securities Depository (KCSD) increased by 102 % compared to the beginning of the year. As of July 01, 2023, there are 1,946 thousand accounts opened in the KCSD’s recordkeeping system, of which 685 thousand are segregated subaccounts that are opened directly in the KCSD recordkeeping system, the remaining 1,261 are investor’s brokerage accounts opened with KCSD’s participants whose assets are to be recorded through aggregated omnibus accounts in the Central Securities Depository.
For comparison: as of January 01, 2023, 963 thousand accounts were opened in KCSD system, 550 thousand of them were subaccounts, 413 thousand brokerage accounts were omnibus accounts. And 99 % of securities holders in the recordkeeping system of the Central Securities Depository are Kazakhstani investors. As of July 01, 2023, the share of non-residents is only 0.8 % of the total number of accounts opened to retail investors.
The Central Securities Depository has made a portrait of Kazakhstani investor based on the data on subaccounts opened directly in KCSD’s recordkeeping system.
The portrait of Kazakhstani investor for the first half of 2023 has changed. The number of women investors grows actively. As a percentage, the number of female investors increased by 5 % in the first half of 2023. If the share of women was 44.8 % at the beginning of the year, in the middle of the year their share was almost 50 %.
"The growing number of women investors is an important step towards gender equality in financial markets. Increased access to information and online investment opportunities has also contributed to the growing number of women investors. It is expected that this trend will continue in the future, opening up new opportunities for women in the investment area," said Adil Mukhamejanov, Chairman of the Management Board of the Central Securities Depository.
The age ratio remains stable. Investors between the ages of 35 and 54 continue to be the largest group, with a share of 36.8 %. The second place is occupied by the 25 to 34 years old group, which also remains stable, amounting for 31 % of the total number of retail investors.
The third place is the group of investors between 18 and 24 years old, which amounted for 18 % of the total number of retail investors.
As before, Almaty (19.9 %) and Astana (11.3 %) retain their territorial leadership.
Turkestan region (9.3 %) took the third place again. The smallest number of securities holders still falls on North-Kazakhstan region (1.7 %). This trend has continued since the beginning of this year.
